Estimating network effects in mobile telephony in Germany
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we analyze the demand for mobile telecommunication services in Germany in the period from January 1998 to June 2003. During this time, the subscriber base grew exponentially by about 700% while prices declined only moderately by about 41%. We believe that prices alone cannot account for such rapid diffusion and network effects have influenced the evolution of the industry. We put this view to the test by using publicly available data on subscriptions, price indices and churn rates. Using churn rates gave us approximate sales levels which enabled us to use standard methods to investigate the effect of network size on demands. Our estimates of a system of demand functions show that network effects played a significant role in the diffusion of mobile services in Germany. JEL classification: L13; L96

Competition in Mobile Telephony in France and Germany
This paper analyses the development of mobile telephony in France and Germany in 1998–2002. We conduct this analysis in relation to the antitrust investigation initiated by the French competition authority in 2002 due to exchange of strategic information and a share-fixing agreement between network operators. The results suggest a significant difference between price elasticities of demand in t...
متن کاملEstimating Reliability in Mobile ad-hoc Networks Based on Monte Carlo Simulation (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Each system has its own definition of reliability. Reliability in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) could be interpreted as, the probability of reaching a message from a source node to destination, successfully. The variability and volatility of the MANET configuration makes typical reliability methods (e.g. reliability block diagram) inappropriate. It is because, no single structure or configurat...
متن کاملForecasting Capital Investment for Fixed-Telephony Network Switching Equipment in Tandem with NGN Migration Using Cobb-Douglas Model
This paper tries to estimate the capital investment required for the fixed-telephony network switching equipment as demanded by the fourth national development plan. As a first step, the Cobb-Douglas model is used as a successful demand forecasting model to estimate the demand over the target years. Then, an architectural plan is developed for the fixed-telephony switching network that takes in...
متن کاملEstimating Network Effects in the Mobile Telecommunications Industry in Germany
We analyze the demand for mobile telecommunications services in Germany in the period from January 1998 to June 2003. In this time we observe explosive growth in the subscriber base and rather moderate decrease in prices. Our conjecture is, that prices alone cannot account for such rapid diffusion, therefore we explore the possible contribution of network effects to industry growth. The impact ...
